The security of the lives and property of UNN students should be the main priority of the school authorities.
However, students have their own part to play to ensure the safety of their life's and property.
The University of Nigeria Nsukka is mostly safe, however that safety is not 100 percent guaranteed and bad things still happen from time to time.
Therefore, students must take caution for their own safety.
Here are some security tips to help you be safe inside UNN
Let Someone Know Where You Are Going To Always
It is important that you have someone who knows where you are, or where you are supposed to be at any point in time.
God forbid if something bad happens to you, at least that person can provide details that will help the authorities in their investigation.
Avoid Going to Odd Places at Odd Hours
There are some places in UNN that are too weird and lonely for you to be at odd hours.
These places are secluded from rest of the school, so anything can happen there without anyone knowing.
Examples include Vet Mountain, the Uncompleted building behind UBA bank, Abuja building at night, Lawn Tennis at night, Mbanefo abandoned hostel etc.
For your own safety it is better to avoid going to these places especially at odd hours.
Unless Necessary, Don't Walk Around at Night
Unless there is something urgent that you need to do in the night, it is better to stay in your house/hostel at night.
Moving about in the night inside UNN can be dangerous because that is when bad people mostly carry out their activities.
Therefore, staying in your house at night will save you from a lot of trouble.
If You Must Walk at Night, walk in Groups
At times, academic or other important commitments will make it necessary for you to walk at night.
However, if you must walk at night, do so in groups.
There is safety when you walk in company of other people.
Lock your Doors When Necessary
Always lock your doors when you want to go out or when you are about to sleep. This way, thieves will find it difficult to access your room to carryout their activities.
Have Emergency Contact
Always have an emergency number memorized.
This is the number that you can call for help Incase anything goes wrong.
Also, have the contact of relevant school authorities Incase of emergencies.
Bonus: Learn Any Self Defence Skill
Learning a self defence skill would could come in handy when you have run out of options.
It could be boxing, karate, taekwondo etcetera.
Remember, your main aim is it use the skill and escape danger. Nothing more, nothing less.
